Our Mexican folkloric dancing group, RAÍCES, participated in the FIRST in-person rally since the pandemic started. RAÍCES performed ¨Huapango de Moncayo" , where they showcased the beautiful regions of Veracruz, Jalisco, Oaxaca, Chihuaha, and even aztec dancing. The student body and campus staff welcomed Raíces with lots of cheers and applause. Our community was delighted to see the beautiful attire and dances represented by each region.

Aguilas Guerreras of NMCHS hosted its annual Day of the Dead event, RECUERDAME III. A few days prior to the event, the high school students and the club adviser/coordinators worked on making approximately 250 sugar skulls, royal icing, and decorating kits. The club invited teachers, school staff, and peers to attend the event. The club officers led the event by teaching our community what Day of the Dead is about and by teaching how to decorate the sugar skulls. The attendees also enjoyed ¨pan dulce¨ (Mexican sweet bread) and hot chocolate. After the attendees finished decorating their sugar skulls they participated in a game of Lotería (Mexican bingo).
For day of the dead, the club also organized a community altar exhibit at our school´s forum. The club invited different classes and clubs to participate. The altar exhibit showcased the purpose, perspective, and practices of this event, which is celebrated throughout many regions of latin america. Aguilas Guerreras of NMCHS hosted its annual Day of the Dead event through a virtual platform this year. RECUERDAME II was celebrated on October 30th, 2020 through Zoom. During the month of October, the high school students and the club adviser/coordinators worked on making over 1,000 sugar skulls, royal icing, and decorating kits. They invited the bilingual and third-grade classes from Elkhorn Elementary as well as the bilingual TK/K classes from Castroville Elementary School to participate in the event, and each student received a sugar skull kit. The club officers led the event by teaching our community what Day of the Dead is about and by teaching how to decorate the sugar skulls. Then the high school and elementary students, as well as their family members, joined the festivities by decorating their own sugar skulls. Over 85 households participated in this virtual celebration, allowing our community to appreciate and celebrate this cultural tradition of honoring our deceased loved ones.
The Gran Baile brought in Banda Sauceda, Banda Manguarense, y Soniodo Caney. The event was a massive hit with lots of people dancing, eating, and having a blast. The purpose of the event is to promote cultural awareness and to advocate for higher education by fundraising for the Aguilas Guerreras Scholarship. All those involved (entertainment, food vendors, teachers / staff, students) volunteer their time and services to assure this event is a success. It is the only dance of the year with live entertainment. Here we see pictures of the event.
